The Full Story
Rum Fish, in Depth
Most bars in Placencia pour Belikin and call it a night. Rumfish y Vino imports its own wine, and that single decision is why people cross the peninsula for a table here. The restaurant sits in Placencia Village Square, looking out over the ballfield, and it has been serving the same blend of Belizean comfort food and international small plates since Pamela and John Solomon opened the doors in November 2008.
The couple found the space empty while honeymooning in southern Belize, then relocated permanently to run it. That is the short version of a story a lot of Placencia expats will recognize: a vacation that turned into a life. What they built is a gastro-bar, part restaurant, part wine room, in a village where neither is the default.
What You Are Actually Walking Into
Rumfish y Vino calls itself a gastro-bar, and the menu earns the hyphen. It reads Belizean-influenced at the base, with the kind of comfort cooking you would expect on the Placencia Village sidewalk, then turns toward international fusion and tapas-style small plates. You can order a full dinner or you can graze, which is the more interesting way to eat here. There is a full bar and local draft beer if wine is not your thing.
The room faces the ballfield, so the view is village life rather than postcard beach. That is the honest texture of eating in the square: kids playing, the light going soft, a glass of something imported in front of you.
The Wine, Which Is the Whole Point
Rumfish y Vino brings in its own wine selection, and it is widely described as one of the best wine lists in Belize. That is not a small thing in a country where most menus stop at two reds and a house white. If you have been traveling the coast and quietly missing a real glass of wine, this is the room that fixes it. Pair it with the small plates and you have the closest thing to a proper wine dinner you will find on the peninsula.
What to Order
The seafood is what reviewers keep coming back to. A few dishes surface again and again:
- Lobster tails and shrimp, the peninsula staples done with more ambition than most
- Lionfish crudo, which is the dish to get if you want to see what the kitchen can do
- Coffee-rubbed fish and curried snapper, the two plates that lean hardest into that fusion-meets-Belizean idea
- Fish tacos for a lighter, walk-in-hungry lunch
- Sticky toffee pudding to finish, the one dessert everyone mentions
If you are working through the peninsula's seafood spots, the lionfish crudo here is the one to line up against the rest. It is also the kind of order that tells you whether the wine list is doing its job.
Who It's For
This is a night-out room more than a quick-bite counter. Come here when you want to sit down, order a few small plates, work through a real wine list, and watch the square. Travelers who have been eating fry jacks and rice-and-beans for a week tend to treat it as a reset. It reads as one of the peninsula's more international kitchens without losing the Belizean base underneath.
The Solomons went on to open a second Rumfish y Vino in Ventura, California, in November 2016, but the Placencia original is still the one on the ballfield, still serving. Reviews as recent as July 2025 have it open and running. When you are deciding which peninsula table to book, this is the one that pours the wine it flew in itself.
