What to Order at Merl's
Start with breakfast. The fry jacks are a reason to show up early, the puffed, fried dough that anchors a Belizean morning. From there the kitchen moves into curry dishes and, the plate travelers single out most often, garlic butter shrimp. Reviewers repeatedly call it excellent, which is worth more than any adjective a menu could print.
Then there is the sweet side, which is where Merl's has built its reputation. The cafe is known for its baked goods and desserts, and it takes made-to-order birthday and party cakes. Merl's sits in the Backadeer area of Placencia Village, behind and beside Yoli's Bar & Grill. Backadeer is the back-lagoon side of the peninsula, away from the main beach strip, so this is a spot you find on purpose rather than one you stumble into off the sand. Use Yoli's as your landmark and you will not miss it.
The cafe bills itself as having served Placencia Village for more than 25 years, which, if you have spent any time on the peninsula, tells you something on its own. Restaurants come and go in a beach town. A small family kitchen that regulars still point newcomers toward has earned that by feeding the same village for a long time.

Merl's is for the traveler who would rather eat where a family cooks than where a chalkboard promises paradise.
